READ : Letter To Upcoming Artiste

Its 1am by my time now and am up as usual because of my hard working alarm clock. As I sit on the sofa in the sitting room with a cold glass of juice, I reminisce about my wasted years regardless of my low sense of humour. After publishing a couple of articles, today I feel I should inspire some upcoming artistes by sharing my ideas with them.

Music is all about vocals, instrument and sounds combined in a pleasing way to give a pleasant melody. Music is a life time business; in fact, music is the most commercial business in the universe.
Music is a career and could also be seen as an occupation, people are making thousands, millions and even building mansions through music. One basic thing in life is to know what your doing, You might spend time doing the wrong things perfectly, but you might not achieve from it. I don't think it is compulsory to study music but howbeit you should know a bit of what you're going into. Am not saying you should compel yourself into music. NO! Music is a God giving talent, your duty is to nurture and utilize it.

For those into reggae, you must not scream into the microphone and make everything noisy. Listen to the late  kings of reggae, Lucky Dube and Bob Marley, and you'll get the idea am expressing.

In addition,It's doesn't matter who started before you, or how, where and when you started, its your hardwork and commitment that will tell. Strive hard, your future is not guarantee, your future is a reward, don't wait to get better before you try, it's the more you try the better you get. Don't be shy, be versatile, learn to be substantive (it means existing in reality) Stay abject because pride is the way down. Never debase yourself, but instead, encourage and motivate yourself, assail and be an assailant of your dreams. NO MATTER HOW SMALL OR UNIMPORTANT OF WHAT WE ARE DOING, IF WE PUT MORE EFFORT IT MAY BECOME A STEP THAT WILL LEAD US TO OUR BETTER DAYS.

As an upcoming artiste aiming to get more downloads and shares, try as much as possible not to debut a single singing about girls, clubs etc. Don't title a song and sing a different thing from its title. I feel why most people don't give ears to upcoming artistes is because they feel everyone is singing the same thing, maybe about girls etc. Be creative, listen to good music, make out time to listen to other upcoming artiste too, but don't mortify anyone, rather learn to rapport, let people around you know what your into, be munificent, avail to any opportunity and maximize opportunity too. be plucky, life is a race, crowds are running after you, if you slack or fall you'll be overtaken and no one will pick you or wait for you. Be consistent, GETTING TO THE TOP IS DIFFICULT BUT STAYING ON TOP IS MORE DIFFICULT. We know the journey of a man is not easy, but God's special Grace will take us to our destination

In conclusion,Stop attaching or depending on another man's work, you were born alone, no one was attached to you. The arrival of money is the departure of insult because there is no dignity in begging. Life is not a rehearsal ground, life is a battle field,so be violent because there is no gentleman at the warfront. Time is no longer on our side, time is like a killer disease, therefore, we must kill time in rehearsing or exercise because no one excels in anything without exercise. Take responsibility for your mistakes, don't  live above your standard.

As an artist you should have professionals and a powerful team who are ready to push you to the top. It is essential that you have the following:

          •A mentor & a coach
         •Room for sound checks
         •Room for critics/criticism

Above all,We should allow our educational suave to reflect on our lyrics in other to charm the soul, Music requires your 80/90 percent of education for easy interaction, etc. On the contrary, music never prevents you from schooling or looking irresponsible. THE WORTH OF A MAN IS NOT IN HIS DRESS BUT IN HIS ADDRESS. Your worth is in your value to men not in the things you put on. Responsibility is the prize for greatness. The wisdom of a man makes his face shine, grab knowledge,be smart in order to get likes from your fans.

Remember forward ever backward never, don't give up,pay no attention to Gossips,I promise you this, you'll make it there.

READ : Open Letter To Orezi

Hey! Orezi, let me start by wishing you a happy new year. I pray we your fans, get to see a bigger you in 2014 by his grace.

Mr Orezi, my reason for writing this piece is to congratulate you on your success of 2013. You made a massive impact in the music industry giving us hits after hits. Lemme make a quick confession to you; Do you know that your songs occupy 20% of my playlist on my phone? I'm not exaggerating on this because I usually don't do such. Your songs like What is the need, Rihanna, You Garrit, Zarokome, Booty Bounce, Maserati rocked my playlist all through 2013 and still does. Orezi, I really do love your genre of music (reggae mixed with afro hip-hop), it is just my perfect taste.

Your inclusion to the HKN gang was one of the highlights of 2013 and your inability to pickup the headies award for the best reggae dancehall song was also one of the surprises of last year. But do you know what? I wanna use this medium to tell you that every disappointment is a blessing. I bet you are calling the shots in 2014 and sweeping all awards this year has to offer because you are a talented artiste. Mehn...dude, I really must say your combination with kiddominant is the best in naija as we speak. Have got an opportunity to work with kiddo and so I know what I'm saying. O boy! that dude is pure talent. You guyz are just perfect for your each other #NotThatAngleThough

But please Orezi, I've come to the appeal part of my letter. I'd like to see an album from you drop early this year. With an album, I'm sure you are going to win the hearts of so many people and cement your place as a A-list artiste in naija. Please do this for me, because I'm really anticipating your album.
Back at Isoko, Delta state were I'm serving, people say good things about you and I only just recently got to find out that you hail from there. That's a good thing, I'm serving in your land #Cool.

My final message to you is for you to keep doing what you know how to do best. 2014 is your year!

READ : Open Letter To Skales

Dear Skales Let me start by wishing you a happy and prosperous new year… Mr Raoul, I would like to admit to the FACT that you are a very talented and Hardworking artist like it’s not really easy switching between singing and Rapping at the same time(should be the main reason BankyW signed you some years ago). There are some things I’ve noticed about your music Career since you Started with EME, some years ago when you released your first pre-EME Single(Heading for a Grammy) I just knew that you were headed to the TOP cause I felt the Heat(HIT) from the song. At that time People started looking forward to you like you are the next thing to storm the Nigerian music scene. BankyW. Signed You and Wiz up, I can remember Him bringing the two of you up on stage at a show announcing the you both as His Retirement plan, but Let me be sincere since then it has been all about Wiz.

I am not sure maybe it’s the Destiny/Star Factor OR the exposure wizkid got when He was still upcoming recording with the likes of OJB, soundsultan e.t.c then that made him a STRONGER FORCE than you in the music scene. I understand that you were still in school which is much needed(thank God you graduated successfully last year) maybe that was what held your music career back a little bit..

When you released your First single(Mukulu) with EME I was like Ok so this guy can sing too an album from him would not be bad. You also gained little Popularity and so on. 2013 was not too bad for your career, your impact was really good on the EME compilation album (this is me forgetting the fame and musical influence wizkid and BankyW got on the album).

Your verses on Baddest Boy, Sunmomi, Get down tonight and so on was on point. You released two singles in 2013 Take Care Of me and Denge Pose(of which denge pose was really slept on) which were AMAZING, the first time I heard Take care of me was on BEAT FM and I was like is this Skales? I mean An average Nigerian artist/musician can’t write a song like that. Now To the main matter, Mister Skales I would like you to Pull a wizkid on Your LABEL BOSSES.

2014 Is YOUR TAKEOVER YEAR, Release an album in the first quarter of this year (don’t care if Wiz’s second album is not yet out) Go for it in the first quarter of this Year or you lose your CHANCE of taking over/Blowing full time. At least the singles Wizkid released last year are enough (No hating to wiz).. I am tired of seeing tweets about you not blowing yet. Before I stop, Mr. Skales Please change Your stylist(if you have one) and your mode of dressing, you can At least Contact Ice-Prince for His Stylist.

THANK YOU…YOU ARE A STAR, SHINE BRIGHT!!!! From:- An Observer.

[MUST READ] : Open Letter To The Headies

Dear headies 2013 organizers,

Let me start by saying i am not just disappointed in you but u have just proved to us that Nigeria is not getting better any time soon. you have been manipulated by a greedy and hopeless telecommunications company (mtn) because they sponsored your event and you forgot the ultimate rule that awards are meant to be impartial and should be decided by the general public especially when u told us to vote. you distributed the awards among 4 mtn ambassadors (iyanya, davido, praiz, and kcee) and just 1 glo ambassador won (waje). Is that not politics or is it coincidence? Now let us analyze.

The headies 2013 was a flop, your stage was shaped like a models runway, the choreographers just lacked ideas and didn’t interpret the music, i have seen a better performance from Nigeria’s got talent. What was the gulder ultimate search theme song that was being played throughout the event? Who on earth uses the mavin slaves -dr shit and tiwa gabbage as presenters of an event? Oh I forgot, the awards lacked credibility and substance. Why did majority of the winners come from backstage, instead of coming from the crowd like it should be? I watched nickelodeon kids choice awards this year and it is far better than the over hyped headies which was not properly planned and hurriedly done #shame

Can you explain to us how olamide won best rap album? olamide has commercialized rap, we cannot tell if he is a rapper or a singer. As far as i am concerned, he is just an entertainer like dbanj. so where does vector, phyno, reminisce, ice prince and illbliss who represent real hip hop/rap stand? Don’t forget that there is a big difference between commercial rap and real rap. all he sings about is remind us that he is from the street but to be sincere terry g is more street than olamide and terry is not even a rapper #justsaying
How can harry song win most mtn most downloaded caller tune song for rip Mandela? when did Mandela die and do u want to compare that dead song with other club bangers in the same category? Simple, it is because harrysong is a label mate to your mtn ambassador (kcee).

In my opinion Jaywon, waje,2 face, Clarence peters , Blackmagic and Davido deserved there awards. how can wizkid not win any  award? Someone who has been the most consistent and sought after this year. i am sure wizkid declined an interview from you that’s why he didn't win. in fact wizzy should be the artiste of the year. Why did dbanj, burnaboy, wandecoal, psquare, flavour not win anything? oh i know why, it is because they are Glo ambassadors.

Now explain to me why Sean tizzle won the next rated award and he was in the same category as burna boy who is obviously more relevant and talented. We all know Sean tizzle has the same old boring style and we can always predict his next song. Phyno too deserved the next rated award and how on planet earth did d-tunes win producer of the year? Someone who recycled 1 beat 5 times (kukere, your waist, mama eh,lenu by spicy, kilogbe). so where does ace producer del b that produced the national anthem limpopo stand? You are all insane!!!!!!

Infact, headies, mtn and Pdp should merge and start a new political party for the upcoming election in 2015. it should be named mhdp( mtn headies democratic party). we all know exactly what happened, mtn agreed to sponsor your event and they gave you the list of who should win. our votes did not count; do you think we are blind and foolish like yourself? Instead of your greedy mtn sponsors to improve their network, reduce tariffs and contribute to the growth of the nation, they will be sending me sms on how they gave free ipad and mp3 to those who sent a sms to a code. They spend all their time looking for how to extort customers and scam us with their ridiculous offers (free airplane and a trip to the moon)

I am sorry to say sir but if u continues this way your company will fold up and collapse because you are not an epitome of integrity. i am speaking on behalf of majority of Nigerians who know the truth and are not afraid to say it. those who feel this letter is nonsense should not forget to curse, insult and threaten me on @baddestdjtimmy. after my last 2 open letters, i have been insulted, chewed up, spit out, as being very jobless, hopeless and a broke laptop dj. you guys don’t know how much i love the insults so it means i am doing a good job and it makes me stronger. So in conclusion, if u have the opportunity to host another award show, learn from your mistakes and let our votes count this time. Let those who deserve it win, is that too much to ask?

READ : Ten Commandments Of An Artiste By @itsUche_FlyGanG

I have been in this Music industry for 8 years now(though underground).

I’ve written and worked with so many arts in the industry, and in the cause of my passion for music and pursuit for a better naija music industry,I’ve come to realize that as an upcoming artist who has a dream to be a professional in the game, there are DO’s & DONT’s guiding. which i call the TEN COMMANDMENTS OF AN ARTISTE.

Check them out below:

1); RECOGNIZE YOUR TALENT: The numero uno of the game is recognizing your talent. You must know your capabilities and believe in them. without this, you have no business in music.

2); WORK ON YOUR TALENT: Once you recognize your talent, the next thing is to work on it. It is one thing to know you’re talented and can sing, but it is something else to actually work on your talent and this could be what determines if an act will succeed or not.

3); WORK ON YOUR PERSONALITY: No matter what kind of music you play,as long as you are in the game to make out a living, you need to have what is called “BUSINESS APPEAL”. [Go check out successful musicians].

4); DON’T JOIN THE BANDWAGON: One of the problems plaguing the industry today is that there are so many artistes but not so much talent. Once an artiste does something new and succeeds, everybody wants to follow that style and that’s the reason why we have so much noise on the airwaves right now.

5); YOU MUST BE FOCUSED: When you have identified your talent, worked on it,acquired business appeal and you begin to grow, you need to work on being focused. Fame is such a delicate thing and one could be easily derailed if care is not taken.

6); RESPECT GOD & PEOPLE: This seems to be one of the greatest secrets working for 2baba. If there’s one thing working for 2face,its his humility. And industry watchers believe it is very central to his success story.

7); BE PROFESSIONAL: As early as possible in your career, you need to begin to think like a professional by aligning yourself with the right people.

8); BEWARE OF WOMEN,DRUGS & WINE: Three factors that have cut short a number of great careers are addiction to women, drugs and wine. BEWARE OF IT!!

9); LISTEN & BEWARE OF SYCOPHANTS :  No matter how big you are,the need to listen cannot be overemphasized. As you grow, people will find it increasingly difficult to deal with your success and so,they become sycophants and start telling you what you want to hear and not what is necessarily the truth. The best thing to do is to surround yourself with tested and trusted people whom you’re gat your back and will always tell you the truth regardless of your fame.

10); AIM AT THE TOP : Don’t be like one of those arts who only want to make it in the music industry for fun. Be like those who want to make it and be at the top. Cos those who went there will definitely come down when the fun is over. But those who went there to stay will be on top and even higher. [Note]: hard work and consistency is required.

That’s why you learn to never ever show emotions

Back then when we be small pikin
Na my niggas from the start
From when it all begin

Chorus – Wande Coal

Amorawa o, ta ba ri rawa
Amorawa o, ta ba ri rawa
Ta ba ri rawa o eh, amorawa
Ta ba ri rawa o o, amorawa

Verse 3 – Wande Coal

Yea yea oda na
Kill them with the rhythm that’s all they need
Yes yes yes yes I believe
Ever praying for the better
Cause it’s all we need yea
All we need
We gotta learn from this
Oh my brother omo na God we need
As long as we got air we breath yea
All i need…all we need
Jen r’owo e lo
Jen r’owo e lo ke
Jen r’owo e lo ke

Chorus – Wande Coal

Amorawa o, ta ba ri rawa
Amorawa o, ta ba ri rawa
Ta ba ri rawa o, amorawa
Ta ba ri rawa o o, amorawa
Oda na, hey je n r’owo e lo
Hey je n r’owo e lo ke

READ : Open Letter To 9ice

With much love bro, i write to express my deep disappointment in your personality, which is supposed to compliment your career. Good looking but your attitude is a poison to your career & same is loosing life.
For a die hard fan like me, your proverbial lyrics are addictive, When Gongo Aso era came God lifted you but remember the higher a man is the more deadlier his fall would be. You make cash monthly, can afford this & that but brotherly, it seems like annointing has dried off you. You are only a celeb for your past work (Gongo Aso & Tradition).

Remember when you had issues with Toni, I never got a believable version of that story from the media, along the line Ruggedy’s name was in the picture .. he whipped you lyrically, he asked you to go ask for forgiveness from your wife.. i now suspect you had a bad issue with human relations but was blinded then coz I love you brotherly, no homo.

Recently, you also made it public that no unauthorised web/blogsite should publish your song, yea its cool to be different & unique; wonderful decision by your management; its the standard way.. I just think you have lost attention egbon, due to inability to show humility & you wanna make some noise through the media, come to think of it how many people still raise the roof for your songs again gan sef?, now out of arrogance & decision that has no SENSE you asked bloggers not to publicize your songs in this download era. how many people buy CDs on the streets? – you have kuku silence yourself.. Lobatan!

Your twins (the two girls), how are they fairing? thought you denied em sometime ago; now you revealed to the public that you are their father.. & that the reason why you denied them is bcos it took you donkey years before you also knew your father, its a personal something… Can you smell the Dumb talk + Lack of integrity, News has it that you baby mama’s sister thrashed you for such irresposible & downgraded brain act; perhaps she also doesnt give F’ or care if you are celebrity or not, she’s a NO nonsense fella! so she has to trash you.

if your crew aint facing you with the truth, coz you are their celebrity friend, “aguntan mi o je labe geesi” , I can step on your toes, get you mad & still dine with you. Incase you got friends that see it as it is, and tell you the truth as it is; pls respect them for the love shown …. You screwed up!

Bros I know you react in anger when confronted, but one word “ti sango ba n pa araba to nfa igi iroko ya” … finish all that up in your mind, cos “akun si inu, lekun nkun”. above all love you bro.

ALBUM REVIEW : Kcee – Takeover

Artiste – Kcee

Album – Takeover

Features – Wizkid, Timaya, Mr Songz, Ajebo, Davido, D’banj, Skiibii, Phyno, Don Jazzy & Flavour

Producers – Black Jersey, Del B, Jo Pee & Soso Sobrekon

Duration: 1:11:42

Label – Five Star Music (2013)

Kcee finally comes through with his solo debut album which is star-studded by the way featuring giants D’banj, Davido, Wizkid, Don Jazzy, Flavour and Timaya. Kcee’s vocal prowess is not his greatest strength but it is bolstered by his army of producers and ghost song-writers to fabricate likeable porous fast-food pop numbers on his quest to takeover.

How he fared? Bask in this track to track analysis of the LP.

1] Hustle Your Way: Kcee’s Takeover kicks off with the safe ‘Hustle Your Way’. The ex-KC Presh member borrows the battered chapter of “hard work pays” from highlife music bible; the solo instrumentation of the first 12 seconds of the groovy spiritual themed song is bound to steal your attention, the remaining 3 minutes and 21 seconds will manage to keep it.

2.Ogadinma: Kcee dives into the highlife realm with ‘Ogadinma’ and impresses with his vocals. Expectations from Kcee are never high so the song will be solidly commended.
Hakuna Matata: Black Jersey creates a guitar enriched beat for Kcee to play on leading to ‘Hakuna Matata’. Like most of the LP, Hakuna Matat lacks originality, sounding like Iyanya’s Flavour or something you heard in Flavour’s discography nevertheless the cut is a generic party cracker.

3.Pullover (ft. Wizkid): Aided by Wizkid and magic producer Del B, Kcee lands himself an infectious and intoxicating pop candy. The catchy hook laced by star boy goes; “Park baby o pullover/ Reverse baby o pullover/Show me your particular baby o pullover…”colliding with Kcee’s paced verses that rise to the occasion making ‘Pullover’ almost irresistible.

4.Do It (ft.Timaya): Targeted at the disc jockeys’ playlist, clubs and dance-floor ‘Do It’ joins the seemingly endless list of generic party crackers on the album. After all is said and done, the Timaya assisted cut will fulfill the intended goal.

5.Adaugo (ft. MrSongz): Kcee’s longtime behind the scenes collaborator Mr Songz a.k.a Harrysongz surfaces on the sweet eastern highlife influenced ‘Adaugo’. Kcee’s declares his love for a certain Adaugo; describing her with local dramatic adjectives, likening her to Egusi and Ogbono soup and urging her to come dance for him. ‘Adaugo’ would fit perfectly in the soundtrack of a Nollywood movie and has the tendency to be effortlesslyneglected by listeners yetit is arguably the album’s best moment.
Skit by Ajebo (ft.Ajebo): A hilarious skit featuring comedian Ajebo where Kcee takes over and annihilates competition with the ‘Limpopo style’ in a fight.

6.Ogaranya (ft. Davido):Featuring HKN Music front-man Davido, Kcee and the Skelewucrooner meets halfway and wows with the thankful and celebratory cut. Ogaranya an Igbo word which literally means ‘big man’ in English is laced in a Don Jazzy-esque manner on the terrific mid-tempo beat making the song a potential music epidemic if treated right. Furthermore the host shout outs a brief list of Ogaranyas ranging from Senator Ugochukwu Uba to Davido’s father; smart move!

7.Limpopo: Kcee strikes gold as he goes crazy and wants to take his love to Limpopo located in northernmost province of South Africa. The massive success of ‘Limpopo’ owed majorly to the producer, created a production blueprint for a couple of songs on the LP as seen on Ogaranya and Okoso. Addictive, highly contagious and spell-binding, one might board a flight with Kcee to Limpopo if caution is not exercised.

8.Totori (ft. MrSongz): Male duet of the year hands down! Kcee and MrSongz once again prove that there is power in numbers on the sultry Soso Sobrekon produced baby-maker. ‘Totori’ is simply an audio delight about the sweetness of a girl; Mr Songz digs deeper and steals the show with his spirited, emotive and convincing performance, it is sad that he is utterly underrated.

9.Emmah (ft. D’Banj):Expect the unexpected as Kcee teams up with international superstar D’banj on ‘Emmah’. This has to be the best feature of D’banj in a while, he brings his strangely impressive voice and larger than life persona complimenting Kcee on the drums and synth driven orchestration of the love preaching song. Unlike most of the generic party rockers on the album, Emmah has depth and will make you go gaga.

10.Had It Been I Know: Kcee strays from the afro-pop and highlife genre that plagues Takeover and tries his hands on reggae successfullybirthing a stellar love song. This song has Mr Songz song-writing imprint all over it although it is not confirmed; be that as it may, ‘Had It Been I Know’ is a champion.
Ifeneme: Things goes downhill on ‘Ifeneme’ as Kcee once again taps into the highlife sound that dominated the first tracks on the album.

11.Okoso: Tailored after Limpopo, Kcee manages to impress with ‘Okoso’. Flogged because of the undeniable glaring similarities it shares with the album’s ninth track yet we cannot help but love the mid-tempo number.

12.Chineke Di Mma: Sadly the highlife gospel aria materializes again on ‘Chineke Di Mmma’.
Ajibole (ft.Skiibii): Reminiscent of great hook lacers Wande Coal and YQ, Kcee’s label mate Skiibiigets introduced on the pre-hook, excites and saves ‘Ajibole’ with the short time he gets on the album. The Black Jersey produced afrobeat inspired banger is about a girl who stole his ‘heart and gold’ and it works perfectly.

13.Vitamin C (ft.Phyno): ‘Vitamin C’ is one of those cheesy songs you cannot help but love, so should we say this is one bittersweet vitamin C you cannot resist licking. The beat and Phyno’s contribution is heavy.
Pullover Remix (ft. Don Jazzy &Wizkid):An unnecessary Don Jazzy verse on the remix of the Del B produced joint weakens the strength of the song, Kceemakes up for Michael’s shortcoming.

14.Give It to Me (ft. Flavour): ‘Give It to Me’ featuring highlife royal Flavour closes the album. Another stellar song-overall highlighting Del B’s production. If this song was released after the album was released it would have been a bigger hit than it already is.
Rating: 2.5/5

[READ] : Lessons From a Rapper's Progession - Reminisce

God’s time is the best is a popular saying in this part of the world; some are quick to invoke this phrase when faced with life’s sometimes unbearable disappointments. But not everybody’s lifestyle depicts a firm believer in the phrase. As a kind of shortcut to success, people tend to cut corners to get what they want, no matter whose ox is gored.

As humans, we expect things to happen immediately we wish for it, in many cases, we have had to settle for less, or more, only if one is wise enough to decipher.

In 2008, when 9ice released his platinum album ‘Gongo Aso’, he featured some rappers in the 8th track, titled ‘Bachelor’, apparently, only few people are aware that our ‘case study’ rapper delivered the first verse in that song, and ever since this rapper has been trying every strategy he has in his kitty, just to be heard, but every effort proved abortive. Unsurprisingly, this particular episode takes front row in every successful person’s life stories.

Remilekun ‘Reminisce’ Safaru is a rapper that has been around for so long, and fortunately, he is still around to tell his story; he has had ups and downs in the industry and now is the time to reap the fruit of his labour.

Albeit, few might not concur with his style of music, like the way he praises internet gangsters (yahoo bois) in his songs, but that was an experiment he tried, alas! And it worked. Ever since, this guy has not looked back. It has been up and up he goes!

Ostensibly, Reminisce is a patient guy, an essential individual quality which majority of us lack; we want to sow and reap on the same day, forgetting that it takes lots of rain and sunshine, before a crop matures for harvest. Perseverance is an important habit one has to imbibe, especially in Nigeria. Patience they say is a virtue (surulere).

Another vital lesson to learn from this rapper is that, he never for once, incommoded himself about the success of his contemporaries. His close pals like Jahbless, 9ice and co, recorded hits upon hits, while he languished in the background. Honestly, that must have been a bitter pill to swallow, but yet, he didn’t shake a bit or act in any way that could make people impute him with envy.

Such experience would make a man chafe or perhaps, give up on his career out rightly, but he kept his guards and marched on. More so, younger rappers came and got big breaks almost immediately, but yet he was unfettered.

In actual fact, waiting for God’s time sometimes, requires some intelligent observation of oneself, more like self awareness. Questions like “am I doing the right thing?” or “am I not as good as I think?” should constantly reverberate in one’s mind, there has to be a form of self assessment to get the true picture.

Actually, Reminisce started as a rapper who flowed well in English language but no one cared to listen to him, except for hip hop heads like this writer, who can identify a diamond in the dug. Luckily, he must have assessed himself intelligently and decided to toe the hard path of tweaking his style a bit in order to blend with the trend, and then returned with the monster hit ‘kako bi chicken’. Judging from the first line of the track, “oh you rappers… I’ve moved on to greater things; I’ll be back in a jiffy” He was obviously stating that he was changing course. Unfortunately, Reminisce has reneged on his promise by not going back in a jiffy; he is really comfortable at the top.

Fortunately, he discovered his strong point and worked on it judiciously. Many people often chase the unachievable, while ignoring the strength and opportunities within, just like in the book Acres of Diamonds. By utilizing his emotional intelligence and self awareness, Remi discovered he could actually perform better in his mother tongue rather than strain himself on the foreign language, he sings and raps in Yoruba, and now, he is better for it and he doesn’t hesitate to flaunt his versatility and ability to switch flows in both languages.

A veteran rapper, who has defied several, advises, to change style and re route his pattern of music in order to achieve commercial success could tap from this aforementioned idea, or what is the essence of spending your life on a career that can’t guarantee full financial returns. If it’s not making money it is not making sense!

Not trying to over emphasize his artistry qualities and humility, Reminisce appears to be a very good team player, with the way he features artistes on his track, he probably understands that two heads are better, or is it the countless collabos he has had with Olamide and those fuji-style singers who often do the adlibs in his songs, this guy knows too well.

Indeed, Reminisce deserves the attention he is getting from the crowd, though he might not be as big as the A list artistes in Nigeria, but his story is worth learning from. As he drops his sophomore album on the 15th Nov, I pray to God to help him ‘fantasi’ the album. Goodluck man. Shot i ye e!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

[READ] : "Chocolate City vs BrymO" - Statement From BrymO's Management

This just came in from BrymO's camp in relation to the ongoing dispute between BrymO Olawale and Chocolate City Entertainment. View the release below.

"On the 30th of October 2013, a meeting was held between Brymo, his Management and representatives of Chocolate City at the Chocolate City office. This was one of many prior attempts at reaching a mutually acceptable resolution of the conflict between the Artiste and the Record Label. After deliberations at the meeting, certain terms were agreed between the parties and Chocolate City promised to capture the terms in an agreement to be signed by both parties. A few days later, Chocolate City sent in a plan with terms which were not reflective of the deliberations and agreements at the said meeting. A similar occurrence had taken place in June when lawyers representing Chocolate City promised to hand Brymo a Statement of Release from the label on the condition that he would give up his (#SonOfaKapenta) album to the label.

The artiste had insisted that Chocolate City has no right to the work as he still possessed the rights to the work and the lawyers had failed to provide the release even after Brymo agreed to give up the said album. Please note that the artiste's initial decision to release his work/ earnings was done in good faith and with a desire to reach an amicable settlement. It is becoming apparent that Chocolate City is not acting in the same spirit of good faith. The artiste elected to sever relationships with Chocolate City in May 2013 when Chocolate City consistently failed to fulfill its obligations under the contract. And rather than resolve amicably, the label is devising strategies to ensure that the Artiste remains unproductive. Brymo asserts that under the circumstances of the creation, nature, execution and implementation of his contract with Chocolate City, he is well within his rights as an Artiste and if no amicable resolution is reached, will be willing to defend same under the provision of the Law."

[READ] : The Misunderstood Business of Nigerian Music; The Wande Coal Case Study

There is no gainsaying that the Nigerian music industry is nowhere close to having structures like its counterparts in the US, UK or other developed countries. However, one could argue that the ‘haphazard’ structures record labels have here have produced some of the most successful artists Africa, and indeed the world, has seen in recent times.

Despite that, there seems to be a common trend of artists being raised from obscurity by record labels, groomed to success, and then same turning around to desert those labels under the most unamicable circumstances.

Alliances are key in any business, especially in one as harsh as the entertainment industry where who you know often determines how far you go, regardless of your talent (or lack of it).

There is quite a lengthy list of musicians that have broken away from producers or labels and whose musical careers are yet to recover – artists who have been unable to score follow up hits since breaking away from a winning relationship.

One of such that keeps coming to mind is 9ice. Regardless of the factors that might have played a part in fracturing his relationship with ID Cabasa, his career is yet to recover from the break with the producer who helped birth the debut album that shot him to limelight. There are others like Chuddy K and GT tha Guitarman, to mention a few.

This leads to two trains of thought, the first of which is: Why kill a working chemistry? Is it because of greed? A lost sense of progress? What exactly is responsible for the prevailing trend of artists dishonouring contracts or wanting out of arrangements that have spurned hits upon hits for reasons fuelled by a desire to earn more money?

The second train of thought is: Should an artiste not 'move forward'? To this, I say, everyone should take steps necessary for their progress. However, things must be done the right way. None of those aforementioned artists have really moved forward.

Wizkid, on the other hand, has laid the ground on how to 'move forward.' Bad blood would haunt any career, so Wizkid achieved a new paradigm in his relationship with EME. He wanted more, but he or his advisers understood that there's a time, place for everything, and things, if done properly, will achieve the best results. The artist is honouring his contract with EME, while building his own record label by the side.

The biggest problem facing artists who want to break away from their hitherto winning formulae is that they take their inexperienced selves into the business of music – not just creating music, as they are gifted at, but becoming their own record executives, and producers amongst other things.

A recent example of this is Wande Coal, who is on a quest to be his own label executive. An artist, in the course of his career, could get to that point but the question is: Is Wande ready? His debut album, which was entirely produced and largely co-written by Don Jazzy, comfortably sits as one of the top Nigerian albums of the decade.

Wande is an artist who, as he says himself, got signed from Mushin. He moved into an apartment in a high brow area of Lagos, drives a choice car and released over a dozen hits during what he now chooses to describe as a 10-year servitude to Don Jazzy. If that’s the definition of serving Don Jazzy, I bet a lot of artists would choose to serve him for life!

Yes, some of the blame lies with the record labels. And here is where I fault them primarily – on the issue of contracts. A press statement released by Mavin Records hinted at the fact that there wasn’t a signed contract between Wande Coal and the label.

This is certainly a recipe for disaster. But then again, not that contracts have ever stopped Nigerian artists from displaying a culture of impunity – case in point: Brymo, who recently released an album in violation of his contract with Chocolate City Record Label.

Wande Coal, however, one upped Brymo by allegedly releasing without permission or credit, a song originally written and arranged by Don Jazzy.

Unlike the rest of the world where grave career consequences follow walking out of a binding contract or intellectual property theft, such is not the case here.

Nigerian acts do these things at free will and earn sentiments from fans, public.

No artiste, not even a Wande Coal or Brymo, should be able to carry on with a music career if he/she decides to walk out of his/her recording contract or ‘steal’ a song over flimsy excuses like “I served you for 10 years”.

If there is to be true progress, there must be an overhaul of the Nigerian music industry, both in terms of structure and mind set. Standard contracts must be signed and artists and record labels must be held accountable for any breaches of such contracts.
